Ask Helloween: DANI
by Treasurechest.de (http://www.treasurechest.de) - translated by Jan Mathis
We recently conducted our second interview where members of the messageboard had the opportunity to send in their own questions for a member of Helloween. As for our interview with Dani Loeble, we had the daunting task to select from more than 50 submissions. Thanks everyone, the response was overwhelming. Since couldn’t put forward all of this huge mass of questions to Dani, we tried to single out the most urgent ones and include a small selection of the more specific.
> 1) Dani, Helloween chose you as their new drummer and you have been in the rehearsal room with them for several months now. What are your feelings? How does their approach differ from the other bands you have been working with?
The mood is totally pleasant. Of course everyone is busy with the recordings. I’m sure you’ll see how well we get along on tour. The guys are working on a very professional level, it’s a huge difference from other bands.
> 2) Tell us about you and your musical background. How did you become a drummer and what are your musical influences? What other instruments do you play?
I started out in, well, the womb. My whole family consists of musicians. When I was eleven or twelve years, I began practicing obsessively (sorry mum). And about influences, my list would be so long, but the biggest influences are the musicians you know on a personal basis, whom you are friends with. I have to mention Jörg Michael in that context! Then there are guys like Vinnie Paul or Tommy Lee... and so on. During my time at the university, I practiced the piano. Well, I would know how to pull it off but I stay with drums, believe me!
> 3) Out of thousands of drummers in the world, what do you think are the reasons they selected you? Who contacted you and how did they convince you to have a go at Helloween?
Charlie Bauerfeind gave them the idea to call me up. He already knew me from sessions with Rawhead-Rexx. I was invited to the studio to play a little. It turned out they then were convinced of my abilities as a drummer. From the beginning the personal side of things went cool anyway.
> 4) Will you be carrying on with Blaze or are you fully devoted to Helloween now?
No, I left Blaze and my baby Rawhead-Rexx. I want to fully concentrate on Helloween!
> 5) Seeing the all the line-up changes Helloween had in the past and in particular with the drummers in recent years, what are your feelings and expectations? Can you see yourself staying for 10 years if things work out well?
Absolutely!
> 6) How would you describe yourself in comparison to the former Helloween drummers? Which similarities and differences are there?
I view my style as a symbiosis of Schwichtenberg and Kusch. I’m not as straightforward as Ingo but not as technical as Uli. I have my own style.
> 7) Did you contribute anything to the new album and is there a possibility you will write your own songs in the future?
I had enough time to bring in my personal influence. We’ll see what I can come up with for the next record.
> 8) What kind of drumset and cymbals do you use?
I’m currently playing a Tama Starclassic. Very neat stuff I think. Apart from that, I use Meinl Cymbals, because they are simply the best, and my signature sticks by Agner.
> 9) What do you think about studio work and the possibility to work with effects? What are your views on programmed midi drums?
What?? Stay away from the production with effects! Ha, I already heard the outcry of the experts in the metal-scene. Midi drums are useful during the preproduction. I can get a picture of how everything is going to sound.
> 10) If you had the chance to drum-duel with a famous drummer, who would you choose?
Oh, I don’t fancy those trials of strength. I would rather sit down with them and chat about things.
> 11) Is there anything you want to say to the fans before we conclude?
Yeah, sure! I’m looking forward to seeing you all on tour and I hope you will like what we do on our new record and the world tour!
Dani, we thank you for your time. Best wishes to you and Helloween
